February 2014 President’s Message

Greetings!  Hope that this finds all of our membership enjoying living in the only state to currently have no snow!!!!  The ASCE Broward Branch has been enjoying a busy start to the New Year, holding our monthly branch meetings and preparing for many events in the near future.  We are proud to announce our ASCE Broward Branch Linked In page, please go check it out and join!  We look forward to using this tool to communicate with our membership on upcoming events and to receive feedback on topics of interest that you would like to see at our monthly branch meetings.  We are also very excited that this year’s Florida Section Meeting will be held in Miami.  Registration is now open so please go sign up and represent the Broward Branch at this terrific event!

As a key initiative of the Branch to reach out to our future engineers currently in K – 12 programs, we are very excited to kick off our West Point Bridge Competition again this year.  We are also planning to reach out to many of our local STEM and Academy programs and are always looking for interested volunteers willing to assist.

In closing, I hope that everyone had a great Engineers Week 2014.  I would like to give a personal shout out to the Broward County Aviation Department for taking the initiative of having their Civil Engineering Consultants come in for a lunch and learn with their staff.  This was a great event and I would like to encourage all of our Branch Members to work with our local government agencies and clients to facilitate events like this so that we can continue educating each other and ensure we all understand the  key issues which effect our community.

We hope to see you at our upcoming Annual Officer Installation and Awards Luncheon at Grande Oaks Golf Club on September 26, 2013. Our keynote speaker will be Broward County Mayor Kristin Jacobs, who will discuss the future of Broward County transit and the Wave streetcar.  At the luncheon, we will present our  branch awards,  conduct the installation of the new 2013-2014 Broward Branch Board, and announce our scholarship recipient.

It has been a pleasure serving on the Board of the Broward Branch of ASCE this past year, and I am looking forward to continuing to serve in my new role as past president this coming year.  Please join me in welcoming our new board and in celebrating our award recipients on September 26th at the Grande Oaks Golf Club.

ASCE Broward Branch President

2011-2012 President’s Message

Branch President Jason Rivera

Dear ASCE Broward Members:

I am pleased to be writing to you as the new ASCE Broward Branch President. My name is Jason Rivera and I have been active with ASCE Broward since I relocated to south Florida in 2005. It has been a pleasure to serve this organization since I was elected as a board member back in 2008, I truly have learned a lot and made some wonderful professional connections and friendships through the organization. Since joining the board I have been a believer in sharing the workload and diversifying our leadership along with not being scared to reach out to people and ask them directly to get involved.   The results have been powerful and very rewarding to see. I am please to boast your Broward Branch has well staffed committees, a larger active member base and we have been recognized by both the FL section and ASCE national for our involvement in both the profession and community.  I look forward to the upcoming year by raising the bar through efforts of membership involvement, offering PDH credits at monthly meetings, and provide more services than ever to our members.

As the new President, I would like to thank the past leadership that has groomed me and prepared me to take on this role; they include Talia Garcia, Angelina Rosenberg, and Jose Lopez. I would also like to thank my current 2011/2012 board members Marta Alonso, Tim Fish, and Jennifer Smith along with our group of volunteers for their dedication and continuous support.  Lastly, an important THANK YOU to our sponsors that make it possible to organize most of the events free of charge or at a very reduced fee.  Having local firms, vendors, and suppliers believe in our mission reinforces to me that volunteering my time is for a worthy cause that creates value to those around me.

We still continue to struggle as a profession and while we hope 2012 brings a recovery we still need to be creative and do more with less during these difficult times. That is why we offer free job postings on our website and in our newsletter. Networking is the key during these periods and we encourage both members who have job opportunities and those who are looking for work to come out to our events and let us know your stories. We know that there is plenty of work to do ahead of us. The new FL Infrastructure Report Card will be coming out shortly and you can still get involved.  There are many projects on the horizon for civil engineers and once funding becomes available they will need our members to be working on them.

We have new and exciting plans for the Broward Chapter activities for the coming year.  We will continue our monthly meetings (first Wednesday of every month) which will offer 1 PDH credit when possible; we will organize our annual joint meeting with Palm Beach County branch; we will have a Holiday Party in partnership with FES, ITE and SWE; and as previous years; we will be organizing outreach events, newsletters, scholarships, the West Point Bridge Competition, bowl-a-thon, government outreach, etc.  We will be very active and reaching out to our members to participate because you only get value out of your membership based on what you put into the organization.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to email me at

Thank You

Jason Rivera
