June 2009

June 10th
Broward Branch Meeting
Thank you to everyone that joined us for this meeting, sponsored in part by TD Bank, where Dr. Nancy Gassman, Director of the Environmental Monitoring Division of Broward County, presented on Broward County Climate Change Initiatives.

On June 24, 2008, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution 2008-442 creating a Climate Change Task Force to develop recommendations for a coordinated countywide strategy in mitigating the causes, and addressing the local implications, of global climate change. The Task Force members were appointed by the Board and are supported by County staff. Dr. Gassman is a member of the Climate Change Task Force Scientific and Technical Subcommittee. The Subcommittee’s mission is to provide scientific and technical information and analysis on the possible near-term and long-term impacts of climate change on the Broward region. These impacts may include, but are not limited to: sea level rise, saltwater intrusion, fires, and severe weather – hurricanes, floods, droughts and heat waves. The subjects tackled address the efficacy and cost-benefit of strategies to mitigate these impacts through greenhouse gas emission reductions; to adapt and adaptively manage our natural systems and the built environment; and the potential economic, social and health impacts of climate change and climate change solution strategies.

Born and raised in the mid-west, Dr. Gassman began her environmental education as an undergraduate at the University of Minnesota. Seeking warmer climes and opportunities for coral reef diving, she entered the prestigious graduate program in the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at University of Miami, earning her Ph.D. in 1995. Dr. Gassman is a veteran of research diving, ship operations, and oceanographic studies in the Bahamas and the coastal waters of Panama. Since leaving U.M., Dr. Gassman has accumulated nearly ten years of professional experience in environmental monitoring and Broward County environmental public policy.
